Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are fairly well known as great opportunities for webmasters to make money with their traffic for specific or general commission based affiliate programs for leads and or sales to the companies paying the commissions. How it works is that an agreement is contracted between the web site owner and the company who want to promote their services on that web site (or if it is within a network the affiliate’s site can choose on programs many times being able to promote the offers once the commission web site has approved the content of the affiliate’s site, usually the commission company is looking for spam, fraud or porn sites to not do business with.

Then once the affiliate’s site is approved the affiliate can go and grab banners, text links etc and imbed them into their site along with a tracking link. The tracking link will usually record the clicks, leads and or sales that come from the affiliate’s site. In some cases the tracking code will also show the affiliate which of their sites the sales came from, if in the case of an affiliate having multiple web sites which they place these ads on.

You can build your own affiliate program or you can go and purchase an affiliate software if you are a site that wants to offer commission sales or leads to affiliates. My suggestion, having done both, build the affiliate system as well as purchase an off the shelf affiliate program software is to make the purchase. Usually you can get the software for not alot of money, under $250 USD and of course there are more robust versions which can cost more or have a monthly cost and a setup cost so that if you have the monthly versions any updates will be included in the monthly plan.

Now you have the affiliate plan in place let’s say, you should get some banners that people can use on their site. If you don’t have an in-house developer we recommend $20 banners which kicks out great looking ads for only $20 each ad. So then you create pages on your web site indicating that you have an affiliate program and you either create a banners page where people can see the banners or you can upload the banners into the affiliate system, the benefit of creating the banners page first is so that any potential affiliates can see what ads you have, many webmasters are particular, and they can decide for themselves before joining the affiliate program if they like the ads & if they would promote them. Of course you will want to put a link on your web site that says “affiliates” or “affiliate program” so that visitors will know that you have an affiliate program to promote.

Now you have to get people to join and promote your company through your affiliate program. If you already have a database of clients you may want to email message them by sending them a newsletter about your new affiliate program. Remember to make sure to include the terms, what the commissions are and if the affiliate program is free to join that is always something that stimulates people to at least check out the program if not to also have them join the program.

Treat your affiliates well and pay them on time, this is one of the most important tips I can give you. If you treat the affiliates well and pay them on time they will continue to refer business to you, don’t do this & the referred business stops. Think of your affiliates as your outside sales force that does not cost you money unless they make a sale, which is a pretty good deal for most companies.
