What is a Homepage?
If you dont know the answer to this then you can truely call yourself a novice or someone who has had a knock on the head lately. The home page refers to the main “Home” page for a web site. This is the starter page where most web site owners have the most comprehensive information about what information areas the web site visitor can find on the web site that they are visiting. Please do not get this confused with the site map which is really where you can find ever page for a web site, although not much comprehensive information is on the site map, but the Home page is where you see all of what the webmaster feels is the most important aspect of his site for his web site visitors.
Some of the information that you might put on a home page is for instance you may have the most current news of the day related to that web site or the photo of the day related to that web site. If you have a blog then you want a current blog to be the first thing that people see when they hit your web site so you will want to continuously create new blog material on your web site to make sure that the visitor knows that the site is current.
If you are a business you will want to make sure that your home page is clean and directs your web site visitors to the areas of the web site that you need them to go in order to learn about your business or to order from your business. Say for instance you have a web site about your law practice, you might have some image related to justice in the courtroom and information on what type of law you practice. You might have a contact us page for your law web site but you might also want to have your contact information right on the home page, especially your phone number to make sure that any prospective client which may be impatient can see that he can get the number right off the home page to call your business and allow him or her to do so without having to search for your contact information.
The best way for you to determine what you want on your homepage is to first think what you want to say to your visitors or what you want your visitors to see. You may want them to read a short couple of paragraphs about what the site is about or why they should be on your web site and then again you may want them to focus on the web site’s navigation so that they can go to specific places around the site where they can read up on the information of that section. You may have a big buy now button on your web site like most of the web hosting companies do with bullet point information, including the cost of whatever it is that they are purchasing so that they can hit the page, make a quick impulse decision to buy and then off they go putting down their credit card or paypal account.
Another thing you might consider is look at other companies web site home pages and see if there is anything on those sites which you think you could use and you should especially look at any of your successful competitor’s web sites as those sites typically have tons of good things to learn from in terms of how you might want to arrange your web site home page.
